Mac Studio: Apple introduces the high-end Mac Mini
So far, users of a small Mac Mini have always had to make compromises when it comes to performance, but this is no longer the case with the introduction of the new “Mac Studio” device category. At the March event, Apple presented a sophisticated mini computer for the first time, which is only about twice the size of the Mac Mini, but can beat almost any other competitor PC at the current level.
In terms of marketing, „Mac Studio“ is advertised as a replacement for the previous iMac 27″ or even iMac Pro, because this series of devices will no longer be available in the future. In terms of price, on the other hand, you have to invest a lot more with the Mac Studio computer than with conventional 27″ iMacs, since the former naturally does not include a display and accessories and still has to be purchased separately.
Based on this pricing, you can also guess which target group Apple is pursuing with the Mac Studio, these are likely to be mainly people or companies who work in software development, film editing or the music industry. On the other hand, the extreme performance in everyday use should not be of much use to average consumers.
Performance on a new level
According to the official product page, the Mac Studio can be configured with the previous M1 Max processor as well as with the new, sophisticated M1 Ultra CPU, the latter is said to be able to process up to 18 streams in 8K resolution simultaneously and should therefore be the only personal computer in the world this accomplished.
Apple’s new miracle chip has 20 CPU cores, 64 GPU cores and 32 cores in the Neural Engine and thus comes to a total of around 114 billion transistors, the Neural Engine can carry out up to 22 trillion arithmetic operations per second, and they continue to do so simultaneously supports up to 5 high-resolution displays and the built-in SSD offers a reading speed of up to 7.4 GB per second.
Users of the Mac Studio don’t have to do without connection options either. The M1 Ultra model has around two Thunderbolt 4 ports and an SDXC card reader on the front, and there are four more Thunderbolt 4 ports, a 10 Gigabit Ethernet port, and two USBs on the back -A ports as well as an HDMI and a headphone connection. Of course, you don’t have to make any compromises when it comes to wireless data transmission either, Apple has installed WLAN 6 and Bluetooth 5.0 there.
Small dimensions, high power consumption
While the normal Mac Mini has dimensions of 19.7 x 19.7 x 3.6 centimeters and only 1.2 kilograms, the Mac Studio computer differs only slightly in height and weight and brings it to 19. 7 x 19.7 x 9.5 centimeters and 2.7 kilograms for the M1 Max model or 3.6 kilograms for the M1 Ultra.
The power consumption of the normal Mac Mini, on the other hand, is at a peak power consumption of 150 watts, while the new Mac Studio draws a maximum of up to 370 watts from the socket. That may sound like a lot, but it is very economical compared to other high-end computers. According to Apple, the Mac Studio computer can save around 1000 kilowatt hours a year compared to conventional high-end Windows workstations with a similar performance.
High demand despite the high price
Although the normal model with the M1 Max processor only starts at 2299 euros, it can now only be delivered from the end of March at the earliest, so the first batch is already sold out and will be delivered to first-time customers from March 18th.
For the more expensive M1 Ultra processor, on the other hand, the demand seems to be significantly higher, where the basic model starts at 4599 euros and can even cost around 9199 euros with the full configuration. Although the first models will be delivered to end customers there as early as March 18, the delivery situation there is even more dramatic. If you only order today, you have to wait until at least the beginning of May 2022 for the basic configuration, in the high-end configuration (9199 euros) the delivery date can even extend to the end of May 2022.
Don’t forget to also order Apple’s Magic Keyboard and a computer mouse, as the normal scope of delivery only includes the Mac Studio computer and a power cord. If you don’t have a computer monitor yet, you should also include this in the purchase price.
