iPad Mini 6 (2021): Apple is updating its smallest tablet
For the first time in a long time, Apple has also given its smallest tablet, the iPad mini, an extensive redesign as part of the special event. Visually, the tablet computer is now based on the higher quality iPad Pro or iPad Air and will not have a home button in the future. This measure also allows the display to grow, only a narrow edge for the thumb rest remains.
In contrast to older iPad Mini models, the new sixth generation iPad Mini offers a completely renewed display, Apple’s marketing name for it is Liquid Retina Display. Basically, this is a high-quality IPS display with P3 color space coverage, anti-reflective coating, true tone and full lamination – so the distance between the glass and the display panel has been reduced to a minimum.
Due to the new rounded display shape and the omission of the home button, the display size can also increase slightly. While only a 7.9″ LCD could be installed in old iPad Mini models, this size increases to 8.3″ in the current 2021 iPad Mini.
From a purely visual point of view, the new iPad Mini looks like a small iPad Pro, but Face ID has to be dispensed with. Apple was probably no longer able to install this feature in the tablet due to a lack of space; instead, Touch ID is used in the standby button. In contrast to the previous model, the new iPad Mini supports the second generation Apple Pencil.
In addition to the display, the internal performance should be reason enough for an upgrade. Apple has installed a powerful A15 Bionic chip in the iPad Mini 2021, which has a 6-core CPU and 5-core graphics as well as a 16-core neural engine.
In a direct comparison to the normal iPhone 13 models, the iPad Mini gets one more GPU core in the A15 Bionic Chip, which should be particularly noticeable when editing photos and videos on the tablet. Speaking of video editing, data on the new iPad Mini can no longer only be exchanged via Lightning. Apple has finally replaced this port with a USB-C connection and is thus based on the previous iPad Pro models.
According to Wikipedia, the maximum clock rate of the A15 Bionic is 3.23 GHz, the chip has over 15 billion transistors and is manufactured by TSMC in a 5nm process. Benchmarks will probably only follow in the next few weeks, since Apple itself has not published any. The company only says that the chip is around 50 percent faster than the best competitor product, and that the graphics unit is at least 30 percent faster. According to initial speculation, the iPad Mini 2021 will have around 4 gigabytes of RAM, which is one gigabyte more than in the direct predecessor.
Apple’s new tablet can be ordered now, the first batch is to be delivered to end customers from September 24, 2021. The iPad Mini can be ordered in four different colours, in addition to the typical space grey, there is also rosé, violet and polar star – the normal „silver“ variant has to be dispensed with in this model series, however.
The price of the iPad Mini is not exactly cheap, for the 64 GB version with WLAN 549 euros have to be put on the table, if you prefer the memory upgrade to 256 GB you have to pay 719 euros. If you want a cellular model with 5G mobile communications, you can get the 64 GB version from 719 euros, for the 256 GB model you have to spend 889 euros.
Incidentally, for our detailed test report we ordered an iPad Mini (WiFi) with 64 GB. The review will probably come online at the end of September or the beginning of October and we will then be linked here accordingly.
