iPad 2019: These are the innovations of the seventh generation

Yesterday we already reported that the new iPad model is a bit more expensive in Germany than before. In this article, however, we would now like to focus on the technical innovations of the tablet and compare the new iPad with the direct predecessor model.

A little more display

The iPad 2019 got a slightly larger display from Apple, instead of a 9.7″ panel as before, there is now a 10.2″ screen. The pixel density remains the same at 264 PPI, so the resolution has increased from the original 2048 x 1536 to 2160 x 1620 pixels. According to Apple, the maximum display brightness is 500 nits, while various tech portals measured around 490 nits for the old model.

Colors, Dimensions & Weight

The colors of the iPad case have remained the same, with Apple again offering a choice of silver, space gray or gold. Due to the slightly larger display, the weight has increased slightly, the WLAN variant now weighs 483 instead of 469 grams, the version with a mobile modem now weighs 493 instead of 478 grams.

The outer dimensions have also changed due to the larger panel, while the sixth generation iPad was still 240 x 169.5 x 7.5 mm, the seventh generation iPad is 250.6 x 174.1 x 7.5 mm slightly larger.

smart connection

With the smart connection, the most important change to the new iPad 2019 must now also be addressed, this offers the possibility of connecting a suitable keyboard case to the tablet. The corresponding contacts are attached to the side, for the so-called „Smart Keyboard“ a surcharge of 179 euros is due, of course there are also cheaper alternatives from third-party manufacturers.

Touch ID is preserved

As one might have guessed from the cheapest iPad model, the seventh generation iPad still has a Touch ID sensor. Apple deliberately does without the more expensive Face ID unlocking method in order to keep the price of the device low. Unfortunately, the technical data does not indicate which generation of the Touch ID sensor is installed – but it should probably be the same as the current iPad Mini generation.

Camera, CPU & radio technology unchanged

The camera of the iPad 2019 has not been touched either, there is still an 8 megapixel sensor on the back, the front camera has a resolution of only 1.2 megapixels and is therefore only suitable for video calls via FaceTime.

Apple still uses the A10 Fusion chip as the main processor in the new iPad. This was already used in the iPhone 7 and in the previous model, the sixth-generation iPad, and has been around for a few years. It is still powerful enough for normal tasks such as web surfing, casual games or as a school iPad.

The integrated wireless technology doesn’t look much better. Apple still uses Bluetooth 4.2 and the same WLAN module as in the previous model, but this is still more than sufficient for a device in this price range.

capacity & price

The seventh generation iPad can now be pre-ordered via the Apple Online Store. According to Apple, the first units will be delivered from September 30th, 2019, and you will also be able to find them in retail stores. The WiFi 32 GB version is available from 379 euros, for the 128 GB version 479 euros are due, but if you decide on a model with LTE mobile communications, at least 519 euros must be planned for the 32 GB version, the 128 GB version costs 619 euros.
