5 cool gadgets with artificial intelligence technology

Artificial intelligence (AI) enables the rapid further development of many products and makes all kinds of cool gimmicks possible. We present five gadgets that make use of this technology. You don’t need most of them, but we still think they’re great. Like pets, fast cars, and slot machines, such gadgets aren’t essential, but they’re just loads of fun. For example, who would say no when they could try slot games for free?

How does AI work?

First of all, we would like to briefly clarify what artificial intelligence is and how the technology works. AI has the fundamental goal of mimicking human intelligence. Machines should independently find solutions to various problems by reacting to their environment. The basis of AI are artificial neural networks. This is intended to simulate human brains. A human being has about 20 billion neurons connected by synapses. Such a network makes learning possible, for example. In principle, learning is nothing more than the acquisition of information and the application of various rules.

The inputs that an artificial intelligence receives from its environment are processed into an output using an algorithm. An algorithm is a set of rules that the computer can use to solve tasks.

voice assistants

One of the most popular and widespread products based on artificial intelligence is the smart language assistant. The more of these devices out there and the longer they listen to us, the smarter they become. The evaluation of incredible amounts of data allows the systems to amaze us again and again. Data is the fodder with which machine learning can be used to gain new insights. In addition, resourceful developers are developing more and more of the so-called skills that expand the assistant’s repertoire. This means, for example, that interactive audio books are possible, excerpts from a legal database can be called up and misplaced mobile phones are no longer a problem. But the little helpers still have their problems with emotions, irony and sarcasm.

The devices can be activated by calling them by name. Controlling the lighting and selecting the music are just two examples of the many possibilities. Amazon’s Alexa is the most successful, followed by variants from Google, Apple and Microsoft.

AI controlled lamp

An alarm clock serves its purpose. But it is not a product that inspires you. Probably nobody would describe an alarm clock as a mature and perfect product. Surely there must be a way to wake up punctually in the morning without being annoyed by annoying and shrill sounds? If you come up with the idea of setting your favorite song as an alarm clock, you will quickly find that after a while you can no longer hear the song.

A modern alternative to the classic alarm clock is the lamp with AI control. It wakes you up with a soft light and takes parameters such as the traffic situation on the way to work into account when setting the wake-up time. If you have smart home thermostats like those from Nest or Tado, you can also have the heating controlled by the alarm clock. An example of such a smart alarm clock is Bonjour.

A lamp with AI control can also be used as a replacement for the many cups of coffee a day. For example, the South Korean company Luple has developed a smart lamp that regulates the light in order to promote concentration in the best possible way. Using a deep learning algorithm, the lamp is able to analyze and understand the behavior of the user. The lamp is activated when there are signs of tiredness or when you deviate from your actual activity. According to the manufacturer, your health will thank you if you replace excessive coffee consumption with the smart light. It should not go unmentioned that the device has to constantly monitor the user through the smartphone camera in order to be able to do its job.

Intelligent body scale

Mateo is the name of the clever bath mat that can perform a detailed analysis of the body. Visually, there is hardly any difference to the classic bathroom rug. But Mateo has many practical functions: weight, shoe size, body fat percentage (BFA), muscle mass, bone mass and water retention are recognized by the scale. Posture can also be analyzed thanks to artificial intelligence. Incidentally, the device cannot simply be tricked: if you do not stand completely on the mat, Mateo will recognize this. The evaluated data can be called up via an app; however, there is no display. Based on the different footprints, the system recognizes which person is currently standing on the mat. Mateo isn’t as pushy as a normal scale and doesn’t rub the weight right under your nose.
At 160 euros, Mateo is of course quite expensive compared to a conventional scale. But the many advantages make up for the price in our opinion.

Smart litter box

One of the central problems in dealing with pets is that they cannot communicate and cannot communicate their problems and needs to us. Artificial intelligence can be a great helper for understanding animals here. With Caremitou from the French company NovandSat SAS, for example, you can always keep an eye on the cat’s weight. Statistics on the frequency of toilet visits and urine samples provide information about the health of the animal and its eating behavior. The biological data is collected with hidden sensors. The gadget can share the information with you via Bluetooth and also make it available to the veterinarian. Caremitou received the CES Innovation Award in 2020. The concept was developed with the help of veterinarians.

Neon: AI as often imagined

Hollywood and fantasy novels have shaped our idea of artificial intelligence and digital helpers. With Neon, Samsung’s subsidiary Star Labs has developed a clever helper that not only offers its support like an Alexa or a Google Assistant, but rather can be seen as a kind of digital avatar. The AI is equipped with emotions and has its own personality. Neon comes very close to the typical idea of an AI. The user can interact with neon like with a human. The real purpose of AI is primarily aimed at companies. For example, such a virtual being can give shopping tips on the display of a department store. Or it replaces classic service employees, language assistants and bots. In the long term, however, use by end consumers is quite conceivable.
